He said long-distance trucks are a more likely application for driverless technology than passenger cars, because freeways are a more manageable challenges than busy cities that present "unconstrained" problems. Rich said he preferred not to estimate when the project would remove a safety driver. A spokesperson said testing without a safety driver would start before then. Aurora said it hopes to begin selling its autonomous trucking infrastructure commercially in select states by late 2023 without a safety driver.
